5. Patch & Shot

Two hormonal birth control methods offer effective contraception –and they free you from having to remember to take a pill every day.

The shot is an injection of hormones that prevents pregnancy, mainly by preventing ovulation. It also thickens a woman's cervical mucus and reduces motility of the fallopian tubes, blocking fertilization. In addition, the shot thins the lining of the uterus, which may make it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant and grow. One shot is effective for three months.

The patch delivers estrogen and progestin and is applied once a week for three weeks, every month. It is more than 99 percent effective, but is not a good bet for women who weigh more than 180 pounds or have a BMI greater than 30.
