Amlodipine is a prescription medication which is available both as a generic drug and under the brand name Norvasc. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Amlodipine inhibits the movement of the mineral calcium into the muscle cells of the heart and arteries. Because calcium is needed for the heart to contract, this decreases the force of the heart's pumping, thereby lowering blood pressure. Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure, and is also prescribed for patients with angina, which is a painful constriction of the heart due to a lack of adequate blood supply. Norvasc is available in 2.5, 5 or ten milligram tablets and should be taken once a day with a full glass of water. The most commonly reported side effects of amlodipine include dizziness, nausea, and swelling of the feet and ankles, but please ask your doctor for a complete list. Also, tell your doctor IMMEDIATELY if you experience chest pain, considerable variations in your heart rate, or any other significant changes. Amlodipine should be used cautiously in combination with alcohol, and by people who are over 65. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with amlodipine. Norvasc can be helpful both in lowering blood pressure and in treating anginal pain. However, this medication must always be used under the direct care of a physician. Please ask for and review all of the patient information provided by your doctor before taking amlodipine.More »
