Transcript:
Ultram is the brand name for tramadol, an opioid pain-reliever approved by the FDA in 1995. Tramadol is a prescription medication which is available as a generic drug and under the brand name Ultram. It is a pain-reliever which works much like narcotic drugs, but without many of the side effects. Like narcotic medications, tramadol enters the central nervous system and binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This relieves pain by blocking out the body's natural response to pain. Because of its analgesic properties, tramadol may be prescribed to ease moderate pain caused by surgery, or by chronic conditions, like joint discomfort or cancer pain. Ultram is available orally in fifty milligram tablets. Ultram should be taken with water. This medication may be habit-forming, so always take it as directed by your doctor. The most common side effects of tramadol include nausea, vomiting and excessive sweating. Ask your doctor for a complete list. Also, be sure to tell your physician immediately if you experience hives or sores on the inside of your mouth, nose, eyes or throat or any other significant changes. Tramadol can increase the risk of seizure in patients with epilepsy and should not be combined with alcohol or medications that impair breathing. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with tramadol. Ultram can be an effective treatment for moderate pain. However, the drug should always be used under the direct care of a physician. Please ask for and review all of the information provided by your doctor before taking tramadol. "The information in this video is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise of your physician. Always consult your doctor before using this drug."
